N.J. weather: Up to 5 inches of snow today for North Jersey.

A quick-hitting storm is set to drop 1 to 5 inches of snow across most of northern New Jersey on Tuesday with a chance for 6 inches in isolated spots, before forecasters start to turn their attention to two more serious winter storms in the coming days.

Snow has already begun falling in North Jersey and will make for a slippery morning commute. Dozens of schools have switched to remote learning Tuesday due to the weather.

Sussex County should wind up with 3 to 6 inches of snow, with 2 to 4 inches likely to fall in Morris and Warren, the National Weather Service said Tuesday morning. Forecasters are calling for Somerset and Hunterdon counties to end the day with as much 2 inches of snow as sleet or freezing rain might mix in later this morning before precipitation moves away from the state by mid-afternoon.

Areas north of Interstate 78 are more likely to be impacted, the weather service said in its morning forecast discussion.

In addition, a very light glaze of a couple hundredths of an inch of an ice is also expected in Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer and Morris counties, the weather service said.

Winter weather advisories are in effect in Hunterdon, Somerset, Morris, Warren and Sussex counties until 5 p.m. and in Passaic and western Bergen until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Less than an inch of snow is expected in the rest of Central Jersey and no accumulation is in the forecast for South Jersey, which will get only rain.

After Tuesday, attention will turn to another winter storm set to pack to two separate punches between Wednesday night and Friday morning, according to the weather service. The first round of light snow might deliver 1 to 3 inches of snow to areas south of Interstate 78 by Thursday morning.

After a long lull during the day Thursday, a second round of snow that starts Thursday night could drop another 2 to 5 inches of snow by late Friday morning.

AccuWeather.com says New Jersey might get up to a combined foot of snow in New Jersey for the two-part late-Wednesday to early Friday storm, depending on its set-up.

“AccuWeather is calling for Philadelphia and New York City to be right on the line between a 6- to 12-inch storm and a 3-to 6-inch storm,” the private weather forecasting company said.

Forecasters are also tracking a potential storm on Sunday, though details on that are unclear as of Tuesday morning.
