Maserati Teases Compact SUV, to Be Named Grecale

Maserati’s sub-Levante SUV's name was announced during the unveiling of the MC20 supercar on Wednesday, and more details are expected early next year.

  • Maserati announced the name of its forthcoming compact SUV, the Grecale, at the debut for the 2021 MC20 on September 9.
  • The Grecale will be built at the Cassino plant in Italy, where the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is built, with the first pre-production examples expected to roll off the line in early 2021.
  • The Grecale will be offered in versions with hybrid and fully electric powertrains, as well as with an internal-combustion engine.

Maserati has big plans for the next few years, and the evolution of the brand is just beginning. Yesterday, the Italian automaker revealed the 2021 MC20, an eye-catching mid-engine supercar, and during that presentation revealed that an upcoming SUV that will slot below the Levante will carry the name Grecale.

While Maserati didn’t divulge much information about the Grecale at the MC20 presentation beyond what amounts to a teaser, information released earlier this year gives us a better idea of what’s coming and when. The Grecale will be built at the Cassino plant in Italy where the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is built; this has led to speculation that the Grecale could share components with the Stelvio, but a Maserati spokesperson wouldn't confirm this. The first pre-production Grecale should roll off the line early next year after a nearly $1 billion investment from Maserati in the construction of a new production line.

No details on the powertrain were shared, but Maserati has said that all of its new vehicles will have versions with hybrid and battery-electric powertrains in addition to an internal-combustion engine. It's likely that Maserati will expand the Trofeo treatment—which brings with it a Ferrari-built 3.8-liter V-8—to the Grecale now that its three current vehicles are offered in Trofeo trims. As the Grecale will slot beneath the Levante, it is expected that it will compete with the likes of the Porsche Macan and the BMW X3.
