New GMC Hummer EV SUV Isn’t Afraid Of Getting Out There

After the internet-breaking release of the GMC Hummer EV pickup, it wasn’t entirely surprising that an SUV variant would be waiting in the wings. We’ve seen countless spy photos and renders, but the vehicle is finally here, and it’s quite a machine. While it won’t go on sale until 2023, there’s still a lot to get excited about.

New off-road tech accompanies the long-awaited return of a Hummer SUV. Contrary to GMC's claims that it didn’t look to its rivals when building these super trucks, the vehicle comes with a power generator – much like the latest Ford F-150.

Referred to as the Power Station Generator, it allows for up to 3 kilowatts of electricity. Sure, it’s not enough juice to put the lights on in a major city, but it will work great for trailside power. It’s still unclear how much range the unit will steal from the onboard batteries, but it’s certainly a useful feature for the environmentally conscious outdoor enthusiast.

Along with providing power, the super truck also has a trail-mapping system, which allows the driver to streamline the adventure planning process. Available via the myGMC mobile phone app, the system can incorporate key points of interest along the journey, such as charging locations. It also marks how far these stations are from the trail and will even monitor real-time energy consumption and an energy usage forecast for the remainder of the journey.

“It’s technology that adds to the Hummer EV’s immersive driving experience,” said Senior Manager for EV complex feature integration and execution Mike Colville. “More than simply locating a destination, we help you find an epic one, create an EV-unique navigation experience when you get there, and allow you to share your trip with others.”

We’ve yet to see these facilities in action, but it bodes well for the future of electric off-road vehicles. With the Dakar rally keen to make a switch to electric power in the coming years and the debut of the Extreme E series, the next chapter looks very promising.
